The brain processes the language differently depending on the age at which it is acquired. As Arturo E. Hernandez states in his The Bilingual Brain, 2013, Oxford University Press “Languages (or single words) which are learnt early, stimulate temporal activity and the most auditory part of the brain and involve more sensorial processing. There is in fact a mechanical-sensory element that is typical of early language learning, whether it is one or more, it does not matter. This is the reason why bilingual people know if a certain sentence construction is right or wrong though they cannot explain why. Words (or languages) which are learnt at an older age, activate instead the frontal lobe regions and, therefore, involve a more rational mechanism in the brain. This is why using a language learned later in life implies more effort”.

In pre-school years, language is learnt through game and fun, in a natural way as the mother tongue is learnt; there is no pressure on “performances” and the innate curiosity of the child, united to the strong desire to communicate, futher simplify the language development process. Children who start learning a foreign language early enjoy learning, appreciate the language, make progresses more quickly and become confident of their skills. This gives the child the chance to listen, acquire and say words with a fluency that an adult student will hardly be able to reach.
The core aspect of children teaching is the ludic aspect: the game downplays the effort to memorize and makes it funny. Generally speaking, this means involving the child’s resources in playful activities, in which the usage of language is focused and not end in itself.
